Reflection Posts
What have you learned about yourself as a writer this year? What improvements have you made in your writing since the beginning of the year?
While writing this year, I truly discovered a passion for writing. I have always been comfortable writing but, I was never very interested in it. I believe this is due to the fact that I had never been exposed to as much creative writing as I was this year. From writing weekly blog posts and personal narratives, I found that I was a strong writer and that it came naturally. I am grateful for my strength as a writer because it causes me to challenge myself on what I can improve next or what other areas of writing I could grow. This year I have made a few improvements in my writing since the beginning of the year. I became more imaginative when it came to the ideas of my writing, and I supported these creative ideas with vivid detail and word choice. Vivid detail and word choice is effective because it sets the scene for the reader and causes them to picture their idea of the writing. From discovering writing I enjoy, to what I have yet to improve, this year was an important one for my growth as a writer.
What are your strengths as a writer? Be sure to provide specific evidence and to use the language we’ve developed in class.
I feel that my strengths as a writer have significantly grown this year. I discovered that writing was not as bad as I assumed it was, and found that I even enjoyed it. Through writing different types of papers, such as personal narratives and literary analyses, I learned what my strengths and weaknesses were and what I specifically enjoyed. After getting the hang of writing blog posts, and my first personal narrative, I found that I was a strong writer when it came to these types of assignments. This led me to the realization that I was best at creative writing. In these papers, I included strong word choice and voice, which included vivid detail and personality, originality, and passion. I find these ideas are essential to creative writing assignments. These aspects are important to these papers because they speak to the audience, causing the reader to feel a deeper connection with the writing, as they can picture it.
What areas do you still need to work on? Why are these areas important?
My success at creative writing, made me notice my weaknesses a little more. After writing my literary analysis and research paper, I found I struggled with these styles of writing. The major issue I have with writing these papers is the mental block. I automatically assume the assignment will be difficult, and throughout the writing process I never feel it adequate, and I don’t challenge myself as I could. When it comes to the actual writing, I found my organization in these papers to be an issue. The organization includes the structure of my paper, such as the order of events, and making my paragraphs flow together seamlessly. I also found it difficult to stimulate ideas for which direction I wanted to take these papers in. I eventually decided on ideas after I took time to strategize and brainstorm. These aspects of writing are important because they make the paper. You could have significant ideas but, if you lack the organization and structure necessary, the paper is unsuccessful. Although I still need to work on these areas of writing, I was successful in my efforts to focus on improving these in my papers.
Create specific goals for your writing for next year. How will you reach these goals?
Next year, I will focus on improving my weaknesses. An example of my weaknesses as a writer is my organization in papers and my mental block of literary analyses or research papers. To battle my mental block, I will keep an open mind with any assignment and will avoid procrastination. I will strategize ideas and brainstorm to give me multiple options on which direction to take the assignment. Also, I will look for help from my teachers, classmates, or the writing center for my papers, getting insight from others. As far as organization, I will spend extra time when writing my papers to focus on this specific aspect. I will take more time, challenging myself to create seamless transitions and flow of paragraphs in my paper. With a combination of focus on making myself more prepared for writing challenging papers and organization throughout the paper, I feel I can accomplish writing at least one strong literary analysis or research paper next year.
